While first studying Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), I read about a process called the 9 Gamut Procedure that EFT Founder Gary Craig included in the “Full” Basic Recipe. It involved tapping on a point on the back of the hand while concentrating on the issue and going through 9 ‘interesting’ steps. I learned that it works when the shorter Basic Recipe doesn’t, or when one gets stuck or has trouble decreasing the intensity of an issue.
After learning this technique, I had concerns about my clients being open to this odd series of actions. But after seeing the amazing results from using the process on myself and others, I decided to add it in whenever needed. And nobody has complained! The 9 steps include eye movements and other activities which engage both hemispheres of the brain. Research shows specific eye movements to be very effective in processing past traumatic memories.
How do we do this 9 Gamut procedure? The Gamut Point is located on the back of the hand about an inch or so down from the knuckles between the little finger and the ring finger. Find that space with one or more fingers of the opposite hand, moving from the knuckles toward the wrist until you feel a slight indentation. When you gently rub, hold, or tap there, it feels like exactly the right spot. This spot corresponds to the Triple Heater acupuncture meridian.
Once you find the point, focus on the issue and continue to tap, hold, or rub while doing the following 9 steps:
- Close your eyes
- Open your eyes
- Keeping your head still, look hard down to the right
- Still keeping your head still, look hard down to the left
- Roll your eyes in a full circle in a clockwise direction (take your time)
- Then roll your eyes in a full circle in a counter-clockwise direction
- Hum about 5 seconds of any song that comes to mind
- Count to 5 out loud
- Then hum about 5 seconds of any song again
Done! Yes, it does become easy once you’ve done it a few times so I recommend practicing. OK… but when exactly do we do this 9 Gamut thing? You can use it on its own, or insert it into the shorter Basic Recipe. After the Setup Statement and tapping on all the other points, follow the 9 Gamut Procedure. Then take a couple of deep breaths and estimate your intensity level. Try it out and see what happens. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
