Have you ever been successful at tapping away a specific pain and been overjoyed about how tapping really works for you? I sure have – many times. And even when I know how well tapping works, it still amazes me each time I remember to tap at the first sign of a headache or backache and the pain just drifts away.
But have you ever been successful at using tapping to rid yourself of a chronic pain, only to have it come back? I’ve been there too. My first reaction was “What is going on?! I thought I had gotten rid of that pain?” Instead of sliding down that slippery slope of doubt, start tapping right away at the first sign of returning pain.
Even before you know what to say, just tap on the side of the hand point. Estimate the intensity of the pain from 0 – 10 so you have a starting point. Then keep the pain at bay by tapping through a round or two. When you tap, you can use setup statements such as “Even though this pain came back and I’m scared I’ll never get rid of it, I completely accept myself,” or use even more specific words describing exactly what you are feeling. As you tap through the points, reminder statements might sound something like “This throbbing headache in the back of my head,” or “This sharp pain in my lower back.” Be as specific as you can.
As you tap and the energy blockages begin to release, really listen to what comes to mind. Think back to the very first time you remember having this pain. What was going on at that time in your life? Is there anything going on now that reminds you of that time? Any people, places, smells, colors, tastes, memories that come up? Tap on those things that create any intensity, one at a time. Make a list if you need to.
You could even ask the pain and your body what it needs right now. What is it trying to tell you? Is it time to slow down and you can’t seem to make yourself take a break? Your body will help you slow down when you need to. Recognize that your body is simply trying to help you in some way. Thank your body for that. Let it know you’re listening. “Even though this headache came back, and I think my body is trying to tell me something, I completely accept myself and I thank my body for trying to protect me.”
Tap several rounds on what comes up for you and then estimate the intensity of your pain again. Hopefully it has gone down. Continue tapping until you feel like you are past the worst of it and are able to control the pain with your tapping. Try to get the pain down to a zero, but at least a 3 or below. If several events or memories have come to mind, write those down for more tapping work. Identify what you are feeling, estimate the intensity, and just tap. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it really works, even when the pain comes back.
Keep Calm and Tap On!
